Η Δοξασία Μονρό διατυπώθηκε για πρώτη φορά το χίλια οκτακόσια είκοσι τρία και στόχος της ήταν να εμποδίσει την επιρροή της ευρωπαϊκής αποικιοκρατίας στο δυτικό ημισφαίριο. Αλλά σύγχρονοι πρόεδροι την έχουν χρησιμοποιήσει για να δικαιολογήσουν στρατιωτική επέμβαση στη Λατινική Αμερική.
